Dental Implant Post-Surgery Care

Louisville, KY
Dental implants are a revolutionary modern dental treatment to permanently replace missing teeth. Because they look and function just like natural teeth, dental implants have become one of the most dependable ways — and our practice’s preferred way — to bring a smile with missing teeth back to life.
That being said, getting an implant is only the first step in the process. What’s also important is how you care for yourself and your new smile after implant surgery. Strong post-surgery care increases the chances that you will heal more quickly and that your implant will be a success.
Our implant dentist in Louisville has compiled the following list of tips to help you care for your mouth after surgery. Following these tips will support your healing process and protect the investment that you’re making in yourself if you choose implants to restore your smile.
Use ice packs
Cold compresses applied to the outside of your cheek — 20 minutes on then 20 minutes off — will help to reduce swelling in the days following your implant surgery.
Rest
Your body begins the heal the moment implant surgery is behind you. That’s why our Jeffersonville cosmetic dentist will tell you to take it easy the day of your surgery and avoid strenuous activities for at least 48 hours.
Gently clean your mouth
You’ll want to keep your mouth clean, but avoid brushing near the surgical site for the first day. Keep bacteria at bay by rinsing gently with salt water the first 24 hours after surgery. After that, you can start brushing again, being very gentle around the implant site.
Follow post-surgery care instructions
Our Louisville cosmetic dentist will provide detailed after-care instructions and may prescribe antibiotics and/or pain relievers. Be sure to take all medication as prescribed.
Choose a soft diet
The best foods after implant surgery include soft, lukewarm foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs and smoothies (but no straw). Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, crispy or chewy foods for at least the first few days.
No alcohol or tobacco
Both alcohol and tobacco, including smoking, interfere with healing and increase the risk of implant failure. Skip any alcohol or tobacco for at least the first few days after surgery — and even longer if possible.
