5 Ways to Damage your Dentures
Louisville, KY
Are you living with substantial tooth loss? Dentures can restore your smile. The initial process of receiving dentures can be arduous, and any type of denture you choose will need to be repaired or replaced at some juncture. You can be proactive and avoid excessive wear and tear on your dentures. Today on the blog, we provide tips to avoid five ways that you can damage your dentures.
Way 1: Dropping them
Spoiler alert… No matter what type of dentures you choose, if you drop them, they probably are going to break. Even dropping them a short distance into the sink while you are cleaning them may cause breakage or the total shattering of the dentures. When you are cleaning your dentures, place a towel in the basin of your sink to help mitigate the damage from any drops or fill the sink up with water. You should only take your dentures out for cleaning or sleep and store them in a safe place – never a counter or a table, where they could end up falling into the floor.
Way 2: Bleaching
A teeth whitening treatment is the most popular treatment in cosmetic dentistry. However, whitening your dentures is a bad idea. The bleaching agent in a store-bought or professional whitening treatment can remove color from the gums of the dentures, or, if you have a partial denture made of metal, the potential consequences include corrosion, damage or even ruining the partial to require total replacement.
Way 3: Improper fit
If your dentures do not fit properly in the mouth, you are going to experience an inordinate application of force on certain areas when you bite down or chew. This can damage or fracture your dentures. Exceptional Dentistry adheres to the neuromuscular dimensions of your mouth when constructing and placing your dentures. That means we factor in the alignment of your bite to help with proper fit.
Way 4: Erratic or improper cleaning
Failing to clean your dentures on a regular basis can lead to the development of a fungal infection called thrush, which may irritate your gums and keep you from wearing dentures at all until the infection is treated and goes away. If you do not clean your dentures properly or on the recommended schedule, your dentures may develop stains or unpleasant odors.
Way 5: Drying out
Your dentures will dry out if you do not keep them immersed in water or cleaning solution when you are not wearing them. Dried out dentures can warp, leading to improper fit or making it impossible for you to wear them in your mouth.
