Crowns and Bridges

crowns and bridges

Do you have a tooth that has sustained significant damage?

Have you already lost one or more permanent teeth?

Crowns and dental bridges are reliable methods of restoring your smile. Exceptional Dentistry offers both treatments as part of our program of restorative dentistry.

Crowns

When installed by an expert dentist in Jeffersonville, a crown replaces the entire exterior of a tooth—even if it has been damaged significantly due to an injury or tooth decay. A crown is usually placed on a tooth as the final step in a root canal procedure.

You can receive a crown in two visits to our office. At the first visit, one of our Louisville dentists will remove any damaged or decayed portion of the tooth, take an impression of the tooth being treated and then apply a temporary restoration. At the second appointment, about two weeks later, you will receive your complete, custom-made crown.

Exceptional Dentistry offers all-ceramic crowns for the most durable and aesthetic results.

What do all-ceramic crowns look like?

All-ceramic or porcelain crowns are beautiful, functional, durable, and reflect light similarly to natural tooth enamel. Porcelain crowns can be matched in color to look like your other natural teeth. They are durable enough to withstand biting pressure when placed on back teeth, yet natural-looking and beautiful enough for front teeth that are visible when you smile.

Dental Bridges

When you have a missing tooth, you can “bridge” the gap in your mouth by receiving a dental bridge. A bridge is fixed, meaning it is non-removable and permanently held in place when the procedure is complete. That also means that cleaning your dental bridge is easy. Brush the bridge and floss the bridge along with your natural teeth.

The bridge will include an abutment on both ends and a pontic that replaces the missing tooth. The abutment attaches to healthy teeth on either side of the space, like a crown. Once in the place, the dental bridge looks like three separate teeth, although it is a single unit restoration. In some cases, we can secure your bridge with dental implants.

Good dental hygiene is important. With a good regimen, your bridge can last 10 years or longer. And, since a bridge is fixed in the mouth, it won’t slip, shift, or irritate your mouth and gums the way dentures can.

As is the case with our crowns, we can create bridges made entirely of porcelain or use porcelain to cover a metal substructure. In either case, the translucent finish of the porcelain makes your new bridge all but indistinguishable from real, natural, healthy teeth.
